Holistic dental care

A mouth is attached to the rest of you.

Dr. Lizzio is committed to providing holistic alternatives to treatment wherever one exists. That means weighing your general health, your sleep and your nutrition alongside the tooth in front of us — not replacing dentistry with something else.

What we mean by it

01

The whole history

Medical conditions, medications, sleep, diet and stress all show up in a mouth. The appointment starts with those rather than ending with them.

02

Biocompatible materials

Tooth-coloured, mercury-free restorations, and metal-free ceramics where they will do the job as well.

03

The least intervention that works

Watching a small lesion and changing what is causing it, rather than drilling it on principle.

The mouth-body connection, without the overclaiming

The association between periodontal disease and cardiovascular disease, poorly controlled diabetes and adverse pregnancy outcomes is well established in the literature. Treating gum disease is worth doing on its own terms, and it is part of managing those conditions.

What we will not do is claim that dentistry cures conditions it does not cure, or that removing sound fillings will fix an unrelated symptom. If you want work done for your own reasons we will discuss it honestly, including what it costs in tooth structure. More on fillings and amalgam.

What teeth reveal

Sleep, grinding and the jaw

Worn, flattened teeth and a jaw that aches in the morning are often the first visible sign of night-time grinding, and grinding is frequently linked to disordered sleep.

Dr. Lizzio has experience treating patients with sleep disorders. Where what we see in your mouth suggests something happening at night, we will say so and help you get it looked at properly rather than just making you a guard and sending you away.

Questions

Asked often.

Do you remove amalgam fillings?

Where there is a clinical reason — decay, a crack, a failed margin — yes. We do not recommend removing sound amalgam purely because it is amalgam, because drilling out a working filling costs healthy tooth. If you want them replaced for your own reasons, we will discuss it and use a safe removal protocol.

Do you offer metal-free crowns?

Yes. All-ceramic crowns are the default here for most teeth in any case.

Do you use fluoride?

We offer it because the evidence for topical fluoride in preventing decay is strong. If you would rather not have it, say so and we will discuss the alternatives and what they do and do not achieve.
