TMJ treatment

Jaw pain, clicking, and the headache nobody connected to it.

The temporomandibular joint is the one in front of your ear. When it and the muscles around it are under strain, the symptoms often show up somewhere else entirely.

TMJ assessment at Garden City Dental Group.

Symptoms worth mentioning

01

Around the jaw

Clicking or popping when you open, aching in front of the ear, a jaw that locks or feels like it catches.

02

Elsewhere

Morning headaches, aching temples, neck and shoulder tension, earache with nothing wrong with the ear.

03

On the teeth

Flattened, chipped or worn edges, sensitivity without decay, and teeth that feel loose but are not.

What we do about it

01

Find out what is driving it

Grinding, clenching, an uneven bite, stress and sleep all contribute, usually more than one at once.

02

A guard, made properly

A custom night guard, adjusted to your bite. The soft boil-and-bite kind can make clenching worse.

03

Adjust the bite where it helps

Sometimes a high spot on one restoration is doing the damage, and smoothing it changes everything.

Questions

Asked often.

Will a night guard fix it?

It protects the teeth from wear and often reduces muscle pain considerably. It does not stop you clenching, which is why we also look at what is causing that.

My jaw clicks but does not hurt.

A click without pain or restriction often needs nothing more than keeping an eye on it. We will note it and compare at your next visit.

Do I need a specialist?

Most cases are managed well in general practice. If yours is not responding, or if the joint is locking, we will refer you and say why.
